Photography is an art that requires passion, an eye for a detail and a good digital camera, as well as a subject.

However you don’t have to stray too far before you find something to satisfy your curiosity. Nature Photography is not about taking a picture of an animal or a tree but it is about how detailed that picture is, how beautiful it looks, and what impressions it produces for the observer. It is never as easy as it seems and to take pictures of raging rivers, thundering white water and snow-clad peaks, it can require a lot more than a good camera and eagerness for photography.

Nature photography, also be known as landscape photography is often comprised of a number of elements, and it is your task to bring the elements together to form the image. But in my opinion Landscape Photography is only one small part of Nature because nature is all around us inside as well as outside in all things.

A photographic arrangement includes what the photographer sees plus the ability to see, arrange, and frame the complete image. There is a distinct skill and if you think you have such a skill then landscape photography will reward you tenfold and may even provide you with a living. To some a pile of coiled rope would be rubbish left behind or a log washed up on a beach may turn into an odd looking creature of old but when you see these images framed as I have then you begin to realize exactly what is possible.

The element that plays a role in defining your picture is scale and if you take into consideration images of nature then you will find that most of them differ by the scale of the scene. There are three main categories to be kept in mind.
These are referred to as;

1. Grand Scenery: The huge expanse of landscape

2. Intimate Scenery: It is often called the elusive aspect of scenery, as you will have to isolate a “scene within the scene” keeping only the essential parts.

3. Macro Scenery: This deals with with the reversal of elements in that you need to enlarge the minuscule, which are so small in nature and can not be noticed otherwise.

It is important to interpret each of the above scenes an unusual and distinct way to get your final image. Another important point to remember is never close your mind to a particular scale you must keep an open mind so that you can take advantage of any other aspect that may present itself.

The second important element to nature photography is the use of Raw Materials which is further composed of sub-elements:

Light: Probably the most important element, you need to identify and adjust its direction, color, and angle

Shape: This consists of the outline as well as the surface of all the objects in a scene

Lines: These can be straight, curved lines and parallel, and may point in or out of the frame towards any object

Textures and patterns

Colors and tones

Frame boundaries

The third important element that you need to work on is Complexity. In any landscape photograph there is an underlying concept that drives the composition of that image. This concept should be used to help viewer to understand the picture or image within various connotations. It also helps to identify the relationship between them and the image. This is why an image should neither be too simple nor be too complex but balanced, it should draw in the eye of the viewer to be able to find the hidden meaning thus making them think a little more which makes for a more interesting photograph.

The final element in Nature Photography is Perspective which is being able to see the final image in relation to where the image was captured.

Once you begin to understand the importance and impact of these elements, you should be able to create the images that will hold your viewers attention.
